The world of Model Trains is a fun and exciting hobby. It can be enjoyed by the whole family and will create lots of friends. There's nothing like toys to bring people together. What to consider first? The size or gauge or scale of the train layout is something to look at first. There are three to choose from G, HO, or N. There are many things to consider when choosing the Gauge you want to start working in. First off is how easy is the size to work with. G gauge is the largest of the three sizes to work in. G gauge is the one most people will use for the train garden under the Christmas tree. It is the most steady and stable and by far the easiest to work with, it being the largest of the three. There are many pieces and parts old and new that can be obtained from all kinds of places besides your local hobby store. It's the oldest size of model train, therefore lots of pieces exist. The next size down would be the HO gauge. It's between the G and N scale. It's by far the most popular all around. It too can be easily found other places than your local hobby store. It's smaller than G, so the detail can be hard to paint and see sometimes. It does afford a large layout for little room. You can even incorporate a Tyco or AFX racecar track into a HO train layout because the cars are HO scale also. That makes for some exciting car races. N scale or gauge is the smallest of the three. It provides the largest size layout for room invested. You will find however the selection of accessories is not as diverse as G and HO scale. However with a little on line research you should find whatever you need.
